Donated for the benefit of family and city: The Legacy of Jakob Fugger in Augsburg

This city tour takes you to the places where you can see just how closely Jakob Fugger’s life and work were linked to his city. At the beginning of the 16th century, Jakob Fugger established charitable foundations for his family, for the city’s community and for future generations. His actions thus form part of the diverse landscape of charitable foundations in Augsburg at that time.

The focus is on Jakob Fugger’s three foundations, established in 1521: the Fuggerei, the world’s oldest existing social housing complex; the Prebend at St. Moritz, an expression of religious responsibility; and the burial site at St. Anne', a place of remembrance, art and representation. They tell a story of piety, social commitment and the aspiration to leave a lasting legacy.

In addition to a tour of the Fuggerei, St. Anna and St. Moritz, the tour takes you through Augsburg’s idyllic old town and offers insights into the Fugger family’s philanthropic activities.

Note regarding this tour

Please note that our two-hour tours should start no later than 3 pm. The second part of the tour takes you to the churches of St. Anna and St. Moritz. Preparations for the service begin there from 5 pm, so entry is no longer possible after that time. We therefore recommend that you take this into account when planning your visit. Thank you for your understanding.

Recommendation regarding your day ticket: Your tour ends in Augsburg city centre. With the Fuggerei day ticket, you have all-day access to the Fuggerei (during opening hours). We therefore recommend that you visit the museums in the Fuggerei before your tour begins to make the most of your visit.
