in exemplum - Foundations as role models, the Fuggerei in context
On inscription plaques at the entrances to the Fuggerei, the brothers Ulrich, Georg and Jakob Fugger justified their foundation in 1519 with a hope: that their example of generosity would inspire others to follow suit. To what extent this expectation was fulfilled has not yet been answered. Conversely, it has not yet been possible to trace the Fuggerei back to a specific model. However, it stands in a close and complex context with similar residential foundations.
21 international speakers will explore important aspects of this context at the conference. Numerous examples from Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy will be used to compare the motivation for foundation initiatives, their societal, social and economic prerequisites and the legal, organizational and, not least, architectural models for their implementation. This not only gives a clearer contour to the profile and special nature of the Fuggerei Foundation; the comparison also leads deep into the European social and cultural history of the pre-modern era.
